Platinum Hair Color Ideas That Will Change Your Whole Look

08:47 0

Among the best hair colors to try in 2025, platinum hair color stands out as one of the boldest and most transformative shades there is. Take it from celebrities like Ariana Grande, Kim Kardashian, and Camila Cabello, who have all debuted their own versions of the icy color to signal new eras. If you’re ready to change your look in the new year—but are tired of the regular blonde, brunette, and black shades—platinum blonde is the perfect way to hit a hard reset.

The best part? The versatile shade looks great on pretty much everyone. “Platinum hair color is an incredibly versatile option, with subtle adjustments to the formula depending on your skin tone and complexion,” says Renée Valerie, director of R+COLOR education. “It’s not just for cooler undertones—platinum can create a striking contrast on warmer undertones, resulting in a beautifully balanced look.”

What is platinum hair color?

As for what classifies as “platinum hair color,” Chase Kusero, cofounder of IGK Hair Care, says the shade is “the lightest shade of blonde.” Think: Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones. “Characterized by its icy, nearly white tone, it’s often called Scandinavian blonde or Scandi Blonde. It has little to no warmth, often featuring cool undertones like ash, silver, or violet.”

To get even more technical, Jennifer Korab, hairstylist and founder of Renaissance Salon & Spa, adds that platinum “is usually considered past a level 10 or 11 blonde.” Despite the lack of warmth, undertones can be changed according to the client. “Platinum could have either warm or cool tones, but it typically appears cooler and whiter,” she says. “Usually the undertone is chosen based off the person’s skin tone, and sometimes there can be hints of blue or silver for the cooler-toned look or for a warmer look the blonde can be a bit more golden.”

What is the difference between platinum hair color and gray hair color?

The biggest difference comes down to finish and undertones. “Platinum is a bright, silvery white tone, whereas gray has a denser, more opaque appearance,” says Valerie. Kusero agrees, adding that platinum is much more “reflective” than gray.

Rest assured, there will be no mistaking your platinum for gray. “Platinum hair color is usually very light and cool toned, appearing icier. A gray on the other hand is more neutral and has a wider shade range as some grays can be more silver or deeper dark gray,” says Korab.

What skin tones look good with platinum hair color?

Platinum hair color can flatter all skin tones; it just depends on the undertones you choose. Generally, Kusero recommends the following guidelines.

Fair: Cool undertones pair well with icy platinum shades.

Medium: Cool or neutral undertones look great with a soft, icy platinum to balance warmth in the skin. For golden undertones, a slightly creamy or neutral platinum works better.

Deep: Cool undertones shine with ashy or violet-tinted platinum, while neutral undertones look striking with soft, frosted platinum.

What is the platinum hair color process?

All three stylists start with a consultation to discuss hair type, hair color, and goals for the shade you’re trying to achieve.

“I always recommend consulting with your stylist first as the process can be different for each person depending on their hair color and health of the hair, or if you have previously dyed hair color,” says Korab.

Once you’ve done the consultation, the bleaching process begins. Be prepared to make multiple trips to the salon, depending on how much lifting your hair color requires. “Achieving platinum hair is a multistep process that requires lifting your natural color to the palest blonde,” says Kusero.

It’s important not to rush the bleaching process, as hair can be badly damaged by a botched bleach job. “Platinum is achieved by bleaching the hair, and it usually tends to require multiple sessions to get very light to prevent any breakage, Bleaching all at once can make the hair become gummy and even fall out,” says Korab.

How long does platinum hair color take?

According to Kusero, light hair will take one to two sessions, brunette hair will take two to three sessions, and dark hair will take three or more sessions over the course of about several weeks.

After the bleaching process, your hair will be treated with a toner. “Toner is used to remove any brassy tones, and depending on if you want to achieve an icier or warmer look the type of toner varies,” says Korab. “Anytime you are doing intense bleaching I recommend cutting the hair to make sure it stays healthy and to get rid of any split ends that can be amplified with light hair. Additionally, hair care is important with platinum hair. Make sure to use conditioning treatments to keep the hair from drying out.”

What is platinum hair color maintenance?

Sorry to all the low-maintenance hair color lovers, but platinum hair might not be for you.

“Maintaining the integrity and luminosity of platinum hair requires dedication, making it a high-maintenance shade,” says Valerie. “For a polished and chic appearance, touch-ups every four weeks are ideal.”

You’ll also definitely want to invest in new hair products that cater to your platinum hair’s specific needs. “I recommend using a purple shampoo to keep the tone icy, reducing heat as bleach can be damaging and drying, using deep-conditioning masks to help hydration, minimizing hair-washing to retain oils, and ending your shower with cold water,” says Korab. “Extra recommendation: A shower-head filter is beneficial in general. It helps get rid of any harsh contaminants that damage or discolor hair.”

Kusero recommends picking up the IGK Mixed Feelings Leave-In Purple Toning Drops and Thirsty Girl Coconut Milk Leave-In Conditioner to keep your platinum pristine and hydrated. “Mixed Feelings Leave-In Purple Toning Drops are concentrated purple drops that banish brass and instantly tone blonde or silver hair when added to any cream styler. These are great for customizing the level of toning to suit your desired look,” he says.

Selena Gomez: How beauty can influence our mental health

10:02 0

We are constantly bombarded with images and social media posts that make people feel like they need to achieve perfection, which is unattainable. I have been open about my own personal mental health struggles and how I have felt “less than.”

Growing up in the public eye is a lot of pressure. It’s hard enough for anyone during those early years but imagine it with the world judging you and commenting on every aspect of your life and choices. Sometimes I do think it made me have a thicker skin and I don’t regret growing up the way I did. It’s an understatement to say I feel incredibly lucky to have a platform where I know I can make a difference.

But that does not mean I haven’t had difficult times. I decided to be open about what I was experiencing, and because of this I have heard from so many people over the years who struggle with their own mental health. It is an issue that has become very close to my heart. I try to use my voice to help reduce the stigma associated with talking about mental health, and to encourage people to celebrate their uniqueness.

There are so many unrealistic expectations for women in our society and a pressure to look and act a certain way. Social media has definitely influenced our idea of “perfect,” and we often turn to these platforms for validation and comfort. But in the end, this also makes us all feel a bit lonelier.

For anyone who is struggling with mental health issues or is simply having a difficult time, I want to tell you that you are not alone.

’m actually a big advocate for social media detoxes. I’m still connected and like to see what’s going on, but it’s important for me to take time away from scrolling. I try to remember that everyone is usually sharing a highlight reel and only their best photos, and that I don’t need to feel bad about not looking the same way.

I’m also a strong advocate for therapy. It helped me answer a lot of questions about why I was feeling a certain way and helped me overcome some obstacles. At the beginning, it wasn’t easy for me to be open with the fact that I was struggling with depression and anxiety. I felt like there was a pressure to be perfect, as so many people looked up to me. But after I made the decision to seek help and be open about what I was feeling, it was such a relief. I think admitting I am a human being, and not perfect – nobody is – was actually more beneficial to the people that looked up to me.

Beauty for the future

I’ve been fortunate enough to work with some of the best makeup artists in the world. I love the art of makeup and experimenting with different looks and how they can totally change a character. Two years ago, I decided to create a brand that changed the conversation around beauty. I felt this was something that was needed in the industry and isn’t discussed enough.

I used to think I had to wear makeup in order to feel pretty, but now I understand that I don’t need makeup to feel beautiful. Now, I view makeup as an accessory and something to be excited about. And that’s really what I want Rare Beauty to embody – wear as much makeup or as little as you want – this is a safe and welcoming space where everyone should feel comfortable.

There’s so much pressure to look a certain way and makeup is often used to hide or cover up perceived imperfections. But we want women – and men – to challenge the beauty “norm” by changing the conversation and celebrating what makes each of us unique.

Since the start of Rare Beauty, my team and I have been building a community to have positive conversations around self-acceptance and mental health. During pandemic restrictions this has included intimate Zoom calls that we call “Rare Chats,” and also profiling members of our community on social media, where we encourage people to celebrate their individual beauty (we offer 48 shades of foundation and concealer to suit all skin tones). I have seen first-hand how many of our followers have formed meaningful connections with one another during this crazy year.

It was also important to me to have a purpose behind the company, and I knew mental health would be a big part of our message. With the Rare Impact Fund, we want to reduce the stigma associated with mental health, address the epidemic of chronic loneliness, and help give people access to the resources and services they need to support their mental well-being. We launched the fund this past July (on my 28th birthday) and announced our goal of raising $100 million over the next ten years to help give people in underserved communities access to mental health services.

We are committed to raising funds with other partners and our community, and one percent of Rare Beauty annual sales will go directly to the Rare Impact Fund. With the Fund, we also created the Rare Impact Mental Health Council, which is made up of expert advisors from leading universities, organizations, and companies to help us make sure we are making the biggest impact.

I want everyone to find the power in what makes them rare. We all need to embrace our uniqueness, stop comparing ourselves to others, and love ourselves more, especially right now.

I have dry skin 24/7 — this $14 cream takes me from scaly to glowy in seconds

07:53 0

I was "blessed" with a scaly complexion all year round — yes, even in summer. But add in the dehydrating effects of being surrounded by the freezing cold many of us are feeling now, and the dryness factor shoots way up. While having sandpaper-like skin is frustrating, I'm here to tell you that, yes, you can achieve a dewy finish with the right products — and the celeb-favorite Weleda Skin Food is my ride-or-die. At just $14 at Amazon, it's not only affordable, it also takes my skin from dull and flaky to luminous and hydrated in seconds. It's the beauty product I reach for on the daily, so keep scrolling to see why I think it's worthy of a "glowing" review.

Go green: This rich cream is packed with nourishing plant-derived ingredients to deliver essential hydration and a glowy finish

I first learned about Weleda Skin Food on (where else?) good old TikTok. From Julia Fox of Uncut Gems to skin-care brand founder Hailey Bieber, celebrities on the app can't get enough of this ultra-moisturizing cream. Even Julia Roberts, the queen of glowy skin, swears by the stuff — and for good reason.

Packed with plant extracts like rosemary, chamomile and pansy, along with sunflower and sweet almond oils, this top-selling moisturizer lives up to its name — it is, essentially, food for your skin. Its creamy, hydrating formula has a moisture-locking beeswax and botanical oil base to help hydrate rough, thirsty skin and leave it glowing and radiant. This nearly 100-year-old product also eschews parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances and preservatives, and it's certified natural by Natrue, an international natural and organic cosmetics association.

The first time I used Weleda Skin Food, I was worried it would feel too heavy on my skin. It has a very thick, rich texture, and the TikTok videos I'd watched advised using it sparingly. That said, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it didn't feel heavy at all when applied in moderation, and I was instantly enamored of its light, citrusy scent. I was also blown away by how dramatically different my skin looked just moments after slathering it on.

You know how some people have skin that literally glows? That looks impossibly fresh and hydrated? That's how my eczema-prone skin appeared (and felt) as soon as it was graced with this cream. It had just the right amount of shimmer without looking greasy, and I couldn't believe how quickly my skin went from dragon-like to dewy. Most impressive of all? It kept my skin's flakiness in check all day.

Though this cruelty-free product is excellent for softening particularly bumpy patches — think elbows, knees and hands — I love using it on my face as a makeup primer. If you have sensitive skin or are prone to clogged pores, you may want to tread lightly, but I find that its ever-so-slightly-tacky texture provides just the right amount of grip for my foundation to cling to. I hate the feeling of having products pile up on my face, so having a two-in-one moisturizer and primer is a home run in my book. It's also effective at keeping my concealer from caking under my eyes, which alone makes it worth the price.

I haven't tried it on my hair, but the brand claims it can also be used to help smooth frizziness and moisturize dry ends — and I wouldn't doubt it. I've also worn it alone without makeup because it makes my skin look better than any other product ever has. Where has this been all my life?

One thing to note is that the cream does contain lanolin, which is derived from wool. This ingredient can help condition and moisturize dry skin, but you'll want to avoid it if you have a wool allergy. I mentioned that this product doesn't contain synthetic fragrances, but it does have a fragrance, albeit one derived from natural essential oils. If you experience irritation from products with any sort of fragrance, you might consider testing it on a small patch of skin first — a good rule of thumb when using anything on your skin for the first time.

With over 24,000 five-star ratings, Weleda Skin Food is a bona fide hit with Amazon shoppers.

"I love this lotion, especially for my face," said one happy customer. "I've been using it for years. I have very dry, sensitive, acne-prone skin with patches of eczema and this stuff has been amazing. I haven't had issues with breakouts and it makes my skin glow."

"My heels and feet are the softest I've ever known them to be!" exclaimed another reviewer. "With New England weather, my facial moisturizer didn't seem to keep my face moist enough. So, I tried this on my face too. I woke up with the softest, most pliable-feeling skin for a 60-year-old."

"This product is very thick and nourishing," shared a third. "It usually takes very little to cover and moisturize my face and neck. One tube lasts me up to six months. I have no issues with applying makeup over it or just powder. It will give a definite shine to your face until thoroughly absorbed, so I usually prefer to just put a bit of translucent powder on my forehead and T-zone."

"The scent can be a little overpowering for those who have a delicate nose," admitted a mostly satisfied shopper. "I absolutely love this face moisturizer, it is the best hydrating product for my skin."

"This may not be for you if you have oily skin," noted a final fan, "but for my type, it's perfect. ... It is especially good as a lip balm. ... It is very thick and melts with body warmth ... so a very little goes a long way."
